Just a month after announcing that The Outer Worlds 2 would be the first ever Xbox game to retail at $80, Obsidian has announced that plans have been changed and The Outer Worlds 2 will be $70.
Obsidian made the announcement on Blue Sky, admirably staying in character the entire time.
“Dear Galactic Citizens!” said Obsidian. “We have received your SOS via skip drone about the pricing. As an organization devoted to making sure that corporations do not go unfettered, we at the Earth Directorate have worked with [REDACTED] to revise the price of The Outer Worlds 2.”
Microsoft made the price increase announcement last month, citing “market conditions” as the reason.
“We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development.” Microsoft told IGN.
Of course, they were not the only company to do so – Sony did exactly the same thing as well. Both companies have also increased the price of their respective consoles.
In a statement provided to Windows Central, a spokesperson for Microsoft has also cited “market conditions” as the reason for the price being decreased back to the standard $70.
“We’re focused on bringing players incredible worlds to explore, and will keep our full priced holiday releases, including The Outer Worlds 2, at $69.99 – in line with current market conditions,” said the spokesperson.
$80 as the standard price seems all but inevitable, but at the time Microsoft made the announcement I argued The Outer Worlds 2 was a peculiar choice to lead the charge for Microsoft. As amazing as the game looks – and it really does look amazing – it doesn’t have the big-name energy needed to push players to that $80 price.
